Opening Event: Year of Mining 2025
60 Years of Industrial Culture (1965 – 2025) in the Shadow of the Tower
An afternoon for the whole family, featuring AH-Singers Fernthal, the Fire Brigade Rescue Group, bouncy castle, face painting, GeoPark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus, etc.
On March 31, 2025, it will be the 60th anniversary of the end of mining in the Horhausen area and the "Lahrer Herrlichkeit" (Oberlahr, Burglahr, Peterslahr). The closure of the Georg mine in Willroth in 1965 marked the end of a mining tradition that had lasted over 2500 years in the region. At that time, around 370 employees lost their jobs. It has been 88 years since the winding wheel of the Petersbach mine in Eichelhardt stood still, which meant the end for 250 miners. Despite the economic setback, many former miners found new job opportunities. The importance of the natural product iron remains undisputed to this day: Without this material, the economic development and self-awareness of the region could not have unfolded in its current form. Even today, the region is strongly connected to the heritage of mining.
To honor this historical connection, the Mining Association, the Citizens' Initiative Willroth (BIW), and the Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld Association have declared the year 2025 as the "Year of Mining." With the support of the GeoPark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus, the State Office for Geology and Mining Mainz, and the planning office Christoph Eul/Mantomedia (Nauort), the goal is to make the economic and social history of the region tangible. The events and projects in the "Year of Mining" are intended to highlight the exciting history of the region and bring people closer to their own story. Tourism will also be boosted by our mining year. Events around the theme of mining will take place throughout the year. In the email attachment, you will find a preliminary overview that will also be supplemented with additional events.
The event will take place to open the visitor tours of the Willroth mine.
