Songs of love and pain

The Romantic era is associated with feelings such as longing, love, mysticism, turning to nature, retreating into fantasy and dream worlds. The individual withdraws from the outer world into his inner emotional world.

The art song reached its peak in the Romantic period. Franz Schubert's songs represented a high point in the history of song composition; he created a close connection between word and sound, in that in addition to the vocal melody, the piano accompaniment also decisively promoted the interpretation of the text. Musical settings of poetry are characteristic. Robert Schumann then developed the piano part into an equal part alongside the vocal part.
