Since 1986, about 50 artists, landscape architects, sculptors, writers, and musicians have been shaping the landscape space "in the Valley" between Hasselbach and Werkhausen. They utilize the local characteristics, which are defined by the Mehrbach, meadows, pastures with native cattle, and forested areas. It has now become a site of 11 hectares into which a variety of site-specific artworks have been integrated, seeking a gentle dialogue with the landscape.
Visiting "in the Valley" in Hasselbach on Mother's Day
On Sunday, May 11th, there will be a special tour of the site for Mother's Day. In the House for August Sander, we will take a look at the role of women and mothers in Sander's peasant portraits from the 20th century. From him, we will also take a quote for our further walk in the valley: "We must learn to observe more and talk less again." On this day, we will specifically focus on the works of female artists. Additionally, we will visit the artworks that particularly address the theme of Mother Nature.
“The most impressive garden project in this country, in my opinion, is the German Bomarzo. It is called ‘in the Valley’: On over 100,000 square meters, the sculptor Erwin Wortelkamp has developed a vast nature garden landscape since the mid-eighties – right in the Westerwald. It is one of the greatest gardens of today, with enormous aura. Also a renaissance: Here, a garden has once again become a life project.”
