Montabaur was already a place of jurisdiction before the granting of the town charter in 1291. A court of lay assessor, which consisted of a mayor and 14 jurors, formed the local justice system for many centuries. In 1867 Montabaur was then formally appointed as the seat of the local court. In 1911, the court moved into its representative new building on Bahnhofstraße, where it is still located today.
