Catholic Franciscan Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Brief description

Historical church on the Old Market. The Baroque church was built in 1734 on the ruins of a Franciscan order church.

Detailed description

The baroque original furnishings of the church have been preserved: high altar, side altars, pulpit, confessionals, and organ front; it is among the most beautiful church furnishings of the Baroque in the Westerwald. It is likely that artists from Mainz or Hadamar were involved here.
The high altar - perhaps also the other furnishings - is a gift from Count Johann Moritz Gustav von Manderscheid-Blankenheim, a son of Count Salentin Ernst, who was Cardinal Archbishop of Prague since 1734.

Below the church is a monks' crypt with the monks who died and were interred here between 1754 and 1811 from the former monastery.
