Description

The orange path requires average fitness, sturdy shoes and fun on steep ascents and descents. It goes along the Great Nister through the deep green, spacious Nistertal. There are steep-like passages along the way, narrow and winding places that could pose a challenge to hikers who are afraid of heights. Past the Nistermühle - the oldest Hachenburger mill - (this is where Konrad Adenauer hid from persecution by the National Socialists) you hike up to great views over the Nister. From there it goes back through the historic city center of Hachenburg with its old market and the lion fountain - the perfect place for a rest before it goes through the castle garden to the destination of the path.

Approach

From Bad Marienberg (east): We leave Bad Marienberg via the L294 and turn left at the end of the street onto the B414. We follow this road through Kirburg and past Norken. After about nine kilometers we leave the B414 to the left onto the L281, which we follow to Hachenburg.

From Altenkirchen (West): We drive on the B414 to the roundabout in front of Hachenburg, which we leave at the first exit in the direction of Hachenburg onto the B413. From Höchstenbach (southwest): We follow the B413 until we turn right into Koblenzer Straße. We follow this road to Hachenburg.

From Betzdorf (North): We follow the L288 out of Betzdorf. At the junction in the direction of Marienstatt, we turn right onto the K21. Immediately after that we turn left to stay on the K21. We follow the road until we come to a crossroads, where we turn left onto the B414 in the direction of Hachenburg. At the roundabout we take the first exit in the direction of Hachenburg, where we enter the B413. Directions

At the information point, take the path to the Burggarten. After about 60 m turn left onto the path and follow the orange lion's paw signs. Turn left in the Burggarten in front of the Landscape Museum and leave the Burggarten via the lower wall opening. Cross the street, keep left and turn right at the first junction. Follow this meadow path to the railway crossing (bridge on the left). Turn right immediately after the railway bridge. Here you have a beautiful view of the valley of the Nister. Attention, it goes steeply downhill after a few meters. Follow the signs through the Holzbachtal to the Nisterbrücke. Continue straight ahead to behind the Philipps Sonderpostenmarkt. Immediately after the market, follow the footpath to the left. Keep left at the end of the sidewalk ("Dorfwiese") and after approx. 150 m turn left into "Hachenburger Straße". After about 150 meters, turn right into "Unterste Bitze" street. After 100 meters turn left again onto the sidewalk. Now the path leads through the flat meadows of the Nistertal. At the end of this path, turn left into Friedhofsstraße. Follow this path for about 500 meters past the underpass (L288). Continue straight ahead to the Nistermühle. Cross the Nister over the pedestrian bridge. Konrad Adenauer hid from the Nazis in the mill in 1944. The Konrad Adenauer commemorative plaque on the residential building (private property) reminds us of this. Leave the road here in the path across the meadow. Pass the "Marienstätter Weg" and go up "Zur Tiefenbach". Continue left at the Cadillac Museum and turn left after the level crossing into Bahnhofstrasse. Pass the train station and follow the Bahnhofstraße up to the Neumarkt. Leave Neumarkt in a southerly direction onto Wilhelmstraße (pedestrian zone). Walk along Wilhelmstrasse to Alter Markt. The "Alter Markt" with the lion fountain is the baroque, historic center of Hachenburg. The Alter Markt to the east left or right of the Evangelical Church to the intersection of Borngasse - Leipziger Straße - Alexanderring. This is where the Burggarten begins. After approx. 150m on the left you have reached the start and end point again.

Safety instructions

The path requires average fitness, sturdy shoes and fun with steep ascents and descents. Wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and wet or heat and sun. Take enough liquid with you. There are not always places to stop for refreshments. Please put on suitable hiking shoes on the way, which will give you sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths. If you think that certain sections of the path are not accessible to you , then you should bypass them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can be muddy and slippery. In autumn in particular, it is important to note that the leaves lying on the ground can cover bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. You have to reckon with path impairments of this kind when you go on a hike. Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons.

Equipment

Hiking shoes are recommended.
