Lesung "Erhaltenswerte Obstsorten für Hessen" Breitscheid

Description

"Old fruit varieties don't just look beautiful, they also taste great!" This is the motto for a special reading on the subject of old fruit varieties. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Matapfel, Schafsnase and Bohnapfel varieties were the most popular apple varieties in Hesse. But the so-called local varieties, such as Altenstädter Roter, Cromelor or Dorheimer Streifling, were also tested for their marketability. Today, it is precisely these varieties that are pomologically interesting due to their regionality and robustness. In addition, old orchard fruit varieties, which have been proven to be rich in secondary plant substances (polyphenols), are particularly healthy and well tolerated.
Pomology is the study of fruit species and varieties and includes their identification, description, recommendation and preservation. It is derived from the Roman goddess of fruit and horticulture "Pomona".
During the reading, the author explains the cultural-historical and pomological significance of old and regional fruit varieties. Recommendations are given for the cultivation, professional care and use of the different types of fruit and conservation measures are explained. There is also the opportunity to see and taste the fruit in a small fruit exhibition. Fruit samples you bring along can be analysed on site. Please bring 3-5 fruits per variety.

Steffen Kahl is a trained gardener, pomologist and fruit orchard hiking instructor. He has already authored over 120 publications in specialist journals, annual publications of the Pomologen-Verein e.V. and numerous publications of his own.
Catering for the guests will be provided by the local Breitscheid fruit and horticultural association. The programme will be rounded off with brandies from the Dirker distillery (including single-variety brandies from old and historical varieties) and Ottfried Schreiter with products (posters and calendars on the subject of fruit varieties and nature) from his homepage obstwiesenshop.de.
An event organised as part of the Literature Festival Leseland Hessen. With the kind support of the Hessian Ministry of
Science and Art, the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen and hr2-kultur.
