Description

We start our little walk at the famous Cistercian Abbey of Marienstatt. The abbey was founded in 1222 by Cistercian monks in the valley of the Great Nister. It is a sacred place and a spiritual hub for the region. The surrounding landscape is shaped by the history and economic activity of the Cistercian monks. The beauty of the Nistertal valley and the diversity of nature make Marienstatt and the surrounding cultural landscape particularly attractive. We discover this landscape on our circular route and learn more about the work of the monks at that time. At seven stations we learn a variety of topics about the history of the Marienstatter monastery, cultural landscape and nature. After the walk we let our soul dangle in the beautiful monastery garden and enjoy the splendor of the flowers.

Directions

We start our walk at the Cistercian Abbey of Marienstatt. From there we walk towards the Great Nister, which we cross at the historic Nister Bridge. Continue right into the alluvial forest. In the alluvial forest we follow the course of the Great Nister until we come to the weir made of natural stone. The path leads us past a clay pit, where a slight depression in the ground relief indicates the former clay quarrying. After a short ascent, we have a great view of the valley of the Great Nister and Kroppacher Switzerland. Shortly before the end of our walk, we pass the rock parlor, where two castles once stood.

Safety instructions

  • Wear sturdy shoes and suitable clothing that is suitable for the weather and protects you from the cold and wet or from the heat and sun.
  • Take plenty of fluids with you. There are not many places to stop for refreshments.
  • Please put on suitable hiking shoes on the way, which will give you sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.
  • If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the path are not accessible to you then you should bypass this.
  • Especially in adverse weather conditions, near-natural paths can lead to muddy and slippery passages.
  • Particularly in autumn, it is also important to ensure that the leaves lying on the ground can cover bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path.
  • You should expect this kind of obstacle to the path when you go on a hike.
  • Although the path is consistently very well marked, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons.

Tips
