Herdorf

Hüttenstadt Herdorf

Detailed description

Herdorf is one of the oldest mining towns in the region. Archaeological investigations have documented the first iron smelting operations as early as the Celtic period between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. The first written sources date back to 914 AD.
In the early Middle Ages, mining activities are only occasionally documented. Mining only became important again towards the end of the 17th century.
From the 19th century onwards, the mining industry characterised the town of Herdorf. The industrial location experienced a significant upswing in 1861 with the construction of the Cologne-Gießen railway line and the development of mechanised civil engineering.
In the following five years, the number of inhabitants (875) tripled. In 1870, more than 20 iron mines were in operation around Herdorf. Several iron ore veins running through the town offered ideal conditions for this. By 1910, the town had grown to 4500 inhabitants.

The iron and steel industry continued to develop alongside ore mining. In the 19th century, several small smelters were merged to form the Friedrichhütte. After the First World War, 2,000 workers were employed in the smelting works alone. The modern smelting works characterised the townscape. The slag sand produced here was transported to the Stahlertskopf by cable car and still forms the backdrop to the town today.
From 1960 onwards, mining gradually came to a complete standstill.

The Friedrichhütte, with its blast furnaces and elevated railway, which characterised the townscape, has been almost completely dismantled. Only a few relics still bear witness to the former character of the smelter town, such as the smelter house right in the centre of Herdorf or the remaining "Ofensau".
