Tea versus gin! During the turmoil of the First World War in German East Africa, young missionary Rose Sayer ends up on board the ‘African Queen’. With her captain, the easy-going Charlie Allnutt and the domesticated gorilla Humphrey, she travels down the unexplored Ulanga River in the no longer quite dewy barge.
Reverend Sayer and his sister Rose can't believe it: The German soldiers' plundering does not even stop at their missionary station in faraway German East Africa. The Reverend's life's work is shattered at the start of the First World War and he dies instantly. What should Rose, the woman left behind, do now? Join the English commander Spicer? Spicer has conquered the African continent overland from Cape Town with two dismantled speedboats, and now he wants to get the boats across the Mitumba Mountains to defeat the Germans on Lake Tanganyika. There, the German gunboat ‘Louisa’ controls the lake.
