The medieval castle of the Counts of Diez was built in the 12th century as a road fortress to protect two old imperial roads. Today it has been renovated and offers a panoramic view of the Westerwald landscape from the observation tower. The castle festival is celebrated every year on the first weekend in August.
Castle ruins
The medieval castle ruins, the old town wall with a remnant of the former town gate and the old castle forge in the centre of town are witnesses to Ellar's centuries-old history (first documented on 18.07.807).
