Weihnachtskonzert "Chorwerk Ruhr"

Description

When music becomes Christmassy, it is usually with a lot of glamour and glory. The cantata ‘Lauda per la Nativitá del Signore’ by Ottorino Respighi takes on a special role: a work ‘in the old style’ that envelops reminiscences of Gregorian chant, Renaissance and early Baroque with a late Romantic sound. The Italian composer, who is best known for his large-scale orchestral cycle Trilogia romana, has created a chamber music jewel that uses choir, solo voices, piano and ‘pastoral instruments’ to proclaim the Christmas message with great intimacy.

Benjamin Britten's famous cycle of Christmas carols - ‘A Ceremony of Carols’ - also builds a bridge to the past. With his archaic, mildly dissonant musical language characterised by church modes, Britten creates an atmospherically dense sensuality of sound that is a fitting vessel for the late medieval poetry he uses from the volume ‘The English Galaxy of Shorter Poems’. And in the midst of Britten's three-part women's choir, the harp enchants its audience as both a sensitive and expansive solo instrument.
