Description

Westerwald - an eventful hike

Even before your hike starts, there is plenty to discover in Hachenburg, the pearl of the Westerwald: among other things, the landscape museum, which is well worth
seeing, awaits you within sight of the trail. The centrepiece of the museum is the baroque hunting lodge of the Counts of Sayn-Hachenburg. The open-air museum displays a group of farmsteads with buildings that were moved here from other places.

You should definitely visit the market square, affectionately known as the Alter Markt. Surrounded by beautiful half-timbered houses, the golden, double-tailed lion, the town's landmark, sits enthroned in the centre. Explore this and many other beautiful places that Hachenburg has in store for its guests on a guided tour of the town.

As the name suggests, the Hachenburg adventure brewery offers its visitors a real experience in the art of brewing. Experience the fascination of brewing beer!

A special highlight awaits you on the way with the spectacular view from the observation tower on the Gräbersberg. After climbing 196 steps, you will reach the viewing platform at a height of 34 metres and, weather permitting, can enjoy the view as far as the Siebengebirge. The Alpenroder Hütte invites you to take a break here.

Directions

After you have looked at the town of Hachenburg or taken the access route from Hachenburg railway station (blue W on a yellow background), your hike begins. You start at the Westerwald brewery in Hachenburg. From here, the blue W on a white background leads you to your first stage destination in Linden. A gentle climb takes you out of the town and brings you closer to nature bit by bit. Through forest and across fields, you head towards the Gräbersberg. In addition to the viewing tower, there are restaurants and a beer garden to stop off at. This is also where the Wiedweg meets another long-distance hiking trail in the Westerwald, the WesterwaldSteig. You have now completed more than half of the first stage. You walk along leisurely, quiet paths towards the source of the Wied and finally reach it. The spring, set in natural stone, lies under the roots of a beech tree that is several hundred years old. Tables and benches offer you the opportunity to rest and enjoy the tranquillity of this place.

Safety instructions

  • Wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from the cold and wet or the heat and sun.
  • Take enough liquid with you. Refreshment stops are not available everywhere.
  • Please wear appropriate hiking boots along the way, which will give you sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.
  • If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the trail are not suitable for you, you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on near-natural paths.
  • Particularly in autumn, you should also be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. You have to reckon with these kinds of path impairments when you go on a hike.
  • Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons.
  • Not suitable for pushchairs
  • Not suitable for wheelchair users
